Ship things you are proud of. Ship things in service of beauty in the world. Ship half a product that kicks ass, over a complete perfected version that is half-assed. Ship things that raise the bar.
Singular focused independent teams. Each core area of the business has one person running it. This one person can choose to hire people if they want, but this single, autonomous team focuses only on this one thing, that the initial key hire is responsible for. Communication between many such teams is to be diminished.
No room for mediocrity - around hires, processes, systems, quality of life. Each person joining the team has a specific reason and area and goal. Office supplies, equipment, environment needs to be of pristine quality in order to reflect a pristine outlook to life and work. Those that join the team need to impress and raise the bar.
Protect attention and work time from meetings, dependencies, with life. Requiring somebody's time on calendar needs to be justified with an asynchronous written message that carefully shows a deep thought process around the issue beforehand.
Play the long game. How can we do tough things today that create unbeatable advantages tomorrow. How can we take a cut today to be immune tomorrow.
Document mistakes. Mistakes incurred through the chase for innovation are gold. But they can never be repeated twice. Publicly showcase these to encourage a culture where it is accepted — in the chase towards invention or faster movement. The rate at which we can try many and learn what sticks is what makes us better.
A Radical Transparency towards the Merit of Ideas. Since every person has a singular focus on their one thing, and they were hired with a high bar of standards — ideas in service of better products are valid. They should be considered over other authority, seniority, etc.
Prioritise bold, bigger ideas over incremental improvements. Invest in experiments.
Obsess over the entire buying & user experience — not just about customers.
Working Backwards. Start with the final desired customer experience. Work backwards to build products and services necessary to deliver it.
